I have started getting noise which sounds like release bearing when driving but goes away if I press clutch, is it the bearing or could it be something else, it’s 300tdi

My guess is you are correct. Although it could be the fork. forks differ 200 and 300 use pressed steel v8 ,series 3 td5 use cast iron ,but release bearing is universal ftc5200. It is not unknown for the pressed steel fork to fail. But they are only £15 - £20 so its not the end of the world.

Hi thanks for reply, bit confused now since someone said  if it was bearing the noise would  come when pedal pressed not the other way about

The only way to find out for sure is to take it apart.

If you are like most of us you will run it till it drops.

Hi I had this  similar noise on car but found it was the brake callipers on one wheel not fully realising but when brake or clutch pressed it stopped but immediately restarted the only thing I found to fix was to completely strip calliper down and clean and that sorted it , need to jack wheels up and engage gear to hear which one it was as it sounded like opposite one but was drivers .
I hope whatever the problem is you find it a easy fix .

Is it only when driving with clutch engaged? From my previous experiences it’s when you push the pedal down that it was noisy, so mainly stationary at lights with clutch down.

What about when stationary at lights. Mine was noisy sat in neutral at lights

No noise when in neutral  or clutch dipped

The clutch release bearing will be at its loudest when the car is in motion, gears selected and the clutch not depressed, the bearing starts to separate after a long period of
time allowing clutch dust and other debris to get to it thus the screaming noise when not depressed. The reason the noise goes away or reduces is you compress the bearing
when pressing the clutch pedal. I suspect its a box out and replace it, best do do the clutch while you in there.
