Matching Size For Single Tyre Replacement (On a Boost alloy)
« on: November 17, 2015, 04:22:42 PM »
Hi folks

Currently all my four tyres are 7.50R16C Goodyear Wrangler. One will be needing replaced shortly.
From what I have read, it appears that this spec of tyre is not really in use any more, or certainly not very common?
I understand that the widely available new metric equivalent is 235/85/R16.
So my question is, is it OK to put a single 235/85/R16 on the same axle as a 7.5R16C?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Kevin, A quick google should find you a fair selection of tyres still available in 7.50R16. My personal recommendation would be the General Super All Grip, though you should still be able to find the Wrangler. Camskill stock them:

The usual suggestion is to buy 2 as an axle set when replacing tyres.  What state is your spare in ?

A 235/85/R16 will be a very different shape, its a lot fatter ( over 9in) for a start and could easily be 1/2 in or more taller - so no, not a good idea to mix them at all. Its an all or nothing scenario.

As far as I know one of these sizes refers to a crossply tyre and the other to a radial.  It is illegal to mix them, if not fatal.

No, the R16 element of the code refers to it being a Radial. Frankly I'm not sure what the "C" means, but its not a crossply.

The Camskill site even confirms in their advert that the tyre is radial.

Thanks for the advice all.
I see that there are quite a lot of 7.5R16 available.
I was just under the impression that these tyres are "old fashioned" and most people were running 235/85/16 ?
Is there any particular benefit in staying with 7.5R16 ? Apart from not having to change all four corners at once!
I think I will have to get two new tyres in the next month or so.
