Land Rover 129
« on: December 25, 2014, 10:49:23 AM »
Hello,

I was wondering if anybody knew a bit about these old prototypes?

  http://legionlandrover.com/img/2008/lofty2.jpg

Looking at pictures of them, the wings and load-bed are obviously wider than the cab - does anybody know if the cab is extra narrow or is it the wings/bed that are extra wide (compared to a "standard" series, which I presume the cab comes from)?

Is the load-bed off a series Forward Control, does anybody know?

I've read that the Series FC used wider track ENV axles - does anybody know if the 129 used the same?  (http://www.legionlandrover.com/manuales/land%20rover%20axles,%20differentials%20and%20...those%20swivels!.pdf makes interesting reading if you're a proper axle enthusiast!)

I'd love to see some pictures of the 129 chassis if anybody has any they're willing to show...

Happy Christmas :)

Nice picture that
Never heard of a 129 but could this be a model such as 88  and a 109
And now we are on 130 a 90 and of course 110
In the picture it looks like a 101 chassis with a series / light weight style cab and a Bedford mk1 body
But on the other hand it looks like a old Russian truck I seen at a vintage show
If you find any more out about this a would be interested to hear about it

There's a good description of the 129 project in this book:

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=XI18AwAAQBAJ&pg=PT303&lpg=PT303&dq=land+rover+129&source=bl&ots=qR-CQYE7IX&sig=ZOyU-DRv7d3g_BpWoc9Ac8_-Ukc&hl=en&sa=X&ei=3SudVPq4A8qrU8uMgPAM&ved=0CD0Q6AEwBTgK#v=onepage&q=land%20rover%20129&f=false

Apparently the 1-ton FC and the 129 were developed in parallel but separately - not sure how much cross-sharing of design and parts there would have been, but the 1-ton FC had a chassis with a subframe built onto it to support the body:

http://www.landyonline.co.za/specs/forward_control_ratios.htm

...maybe the 129 had the same?

There's a degree of irony in finding it a day (or two) after Christmas, then :)

It does look quite good - I was reading the chapter on engines before I ran out of pages to view...
