Conversion Services - Looking for a rough cost/person to do it
« on: December 06, 2014, 10:35:05 AM »
Does anyone know of a person or company in scotland that would undertake an engine conversion in my landy 110?

Currently has a 2.5TD and im looking at having a more powerful engine put it in, what would be the rough cost in labour?

I have been quoted around 600 from winchburgh services(however he wasnt keen on undertaking the work)

Hi John, I am located in West Lothian, just outside of bathgate.

The engine has done 50K, gearbox etc is good, radiator and power steering pump have seen better days.

If you message me your details I would be happy to keep you in mind once the engine is removed.

No problem. I'm having difficulty finding someone to do the conversion at an affordable cost. Soon as the conversion is done and the engine is out it will be up for grabs. Unless someone wants to take it as part payment for carrying out the work. Will keep everyone upto date.

The 2.5 Turbo Diesel can be replaced by the 200tdi pretty easily.

You need to also replace the radiator and exhaust system..... but keep the engine-mounts: the block will take either, the chassis will only take the TD mounts.

Most garages won't be interested in doing a job like that, they make far more money doing quick turn around jobs like servicing brakes and exhausts.
That said there will be someone out there who will do it, but if you think that £600 is very expensive then I think your being unrealistic especially if that was including fluids and sundries, Dan the man in a driveway may do it cheaper, but £600 represents about 10 to 12 hours labour inc vat in your average independent garage, which may be okay for a like for like swap but for anything other than that there will be some degree of modification required, some more involved than others and these are the things that take the time.
A defender 200tdi transplant is the simplest solutionIf you go for a 300tdi or V8 then there is alot more to it and you have to fabricate mounts, modify wiring exhausts possibly change gearboxes etc etc and may be better with a donor vehicle, so I'd expect you'll be much more than £600 labour.

If you can find a good 200Tdi - the simplest option - then the job is in the "weekends worth of DIY" range rather than getting a garage to do it, if money is a problem. I remember paying considerably more than the figure you quote - over 20 years ago, for a 2.5Td to 200 Tdi professional conversion. If you have a couple of helpful friends and access to an engine crane, a warm shed and a kettle that might be the way to go.

If you want professional help then GEMM at Larbert would be a place to ask and not that far from you, with a number of Club members on the staff. There are others out there but further away - Lix at Killin and Strathearn at Auchterarder have also done good work for me.
If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

Thank you all for the honest feedback. I have found a 200tdi on here so I am going to purchase that. £600 is expensive to me as I'm on a shoe string budget and the only purpose of the upgrade is to be able to tow faster. I think what I will do is purchase the parts and just save and get the work done next year. Carrying out the work other than welding I am comfortable with however don't have a drive or garage/shed so is a bit of a big job to do in my local street. I rebuilt my freelander in the street and it was a nightmare.
