bias plate td5

hi all quick question am renewing the bias plate and springs in my td5 disco and the gearstick has two sots on it one either side does anyone know if this is  wear and tear and should be welded up or do they come like this ? thanks in advance

short answer is should be smooth welded the slots smooth and ground them back to flush and the gearchange has been restored to good as new !
