Abandoned Vehicle....
« on: October 27, 2013, 07:22:56 PM »
Here is a question for you all, on my neighbors land the is a Defender left to rot, not been up to take a close look just yet but it has been abandoned, can tell by the flat tyres and the moss growing from around the windows and the tax has been out for a few years...OK maybe I did have a close look, anyway where does the law stand if I want to take ownership of the vehicle, anybody know the answer?

Is there a reason you cannot locate the owner and ask him/her if the vehicle is for sale? If one of my derelict/looks abandoned/breaking for spares vehicles disappeared I would consider it stolen and report it as such!

Does your neighbour still live in the house? if not you could possibly assume ownership of the house and the car :)

I assume it belongs to the land owner or is at least there at their behest, If the land owner has no knowledge of who owns it then it should be reported as an abandoned vehicle, it may even be stolen?

You don't have to be the owner to be the registered keeper but you would still require some form of proof of ownership, if challenged by the police or DVLA
In the 90's My former boss rented a unit in Gifnock that had been lying unoccupied for a few years and there was a dusty old 1970's Alfa Romeo GTV, he couldn't find the owner or trace the previous tenants and applied for the book, restored it and kept it, however he was lucky.

I should say that my farm is in Spain and the Police over here are not interested as far as they care I can have it as the vehicle is illegal over here. Parts are starting to get stolen from on the car and I'd sooner use it as a work horse rather than let it slowly be pulled apart.

At the very least I'd suggest a chat with the neighbour.
