Speedo issues

Folks has anybody replaced a speedo transducer on the back a the transferbox on a  discovery, about the 95 era ? I have no speedo running at the mo . Does anyone know if the needle on the transducer wears to a circular shape so that it no longer turns the square spindle it mates to on the gearbox or is the needle on the transducer circular in any case ?

i think the transducer has a square drive , when i fitted a disco box to my defender i just pulled the transducer out and fitted a standard speedo cable in
