NO dipped beam / main beam
« on: October 25, 2013, 10:14:36 PM »
Upon driving home tonight my dipped beam & main beam stopped working.
Side lights are ok as is main beam if you go to flash someone.
Luckily it was only a few fields to cross.
Checked the fuses but no problems, I dont hear a relay clicking.
Having checked the wiring diagram I'm suspecting it is the switch stalk it self or headlight relay.
Anything else to be checking?
Haynes manual has 2 wiring diagrams for Headlights - without dim / dip & Headlights - with dim /dip. The difference being a dim/dip relay and resistor pack. Any idea which applies to a 2000 td5 defender?

this happened to my 110 td5 (2004), the dim dip relay packed in, ( Lucas 13DA YWC 10050) it is behind the speedo, the resistor pack is inside the drivers side wing. The dim dip relay can be bypassed by unplugging it and inserting a wire with 2 male spade crimps into the relevant socket holes. If you require a new relay I do have some new ones!

Problem diagnosed as the dip / main beam, indicator stalk. It has power in but won't send it on.
Hoping theres one lying on the scrap landy up the back.
Stupid place to put the big relay. I would have struggled to find it.
Thanks for the help.

Same experience with my 90. The static contacts inside the stalk had melted their way into the plastic of the casing so that the contacts no longer met.

As a bodge you may be able to scrape the melted plastic away and wedge the contacts closer together until you get a new stalk.
If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

you could try fitting a by pass switch from the power to the stalk and back to the lights so you can switch them manually by hand till you get a new stock?
