300tdi crankshaft oil seal
« on: October 23, 2012, 09:08:47 PM »
Hi all,

I have completed my 2.5td to 300tdi conversion. Quite a difference ;D.
Before i installed the engine i renewed the timing belt, tensioner, and crankshaft sprocket. It all came together in an upgrade kit.
A new Land rover crankshaft front seal was also fitted.

After around 100 miles i started to get an oil leak from the front wading plug hole. I replaced this on sunday night and its leaking again...

I took care not to damage the seal during installation.

Im gutted..It took me ages to get timing right after removing the timing belt, What am i doing wrong?

Hi Iain,

I was told some 300tdi's were prone to premature belt wear. The solution was to fit a crankshaft pulley that has shoulders to hold the belt in place. This new pulley is what the seal seals too. I checked it the second time for any flaws and it has no grooves or marks on the seal face.

Check the "O" ring seal inside the crankshaft sprocket, the oil could be passing along between the sprocket  and crank. The timing belt excessive wear appeared to be caused by the bracket locating the rear of the injection pump not having movable spigots to allow for maching tolerances. Tightening up the bracket/pump could flex the whole front casing around the injection pump enough to make the belt run out of line.

I will order the parts tommorrow, including the O ring, is there a knack to fitting the O ring. I carefully fitted it to the shaft over the key then slid the sprocket on. I was unable to see if it is seated properly in the sprocket.
