Graeme,

Dave runs his winch from the cranking battery, don't think he's had any issues with it. Maybe save you some money?

Stephen I take it that dave has a fairly big powerful battery.
If it saves me money that sounds good ;D

I don't think so, he is thinking of putting an old D3 one in but so far I think he's used the original, PM him!

I normally rate a split charge so it can handle the maximum output from the alternator to charge the second battery. Normally use either 100 amp/120amp relays and 266/0.30 cable(rated to 135amp). I've just finished an installation on a 110 with extra lights, second battery/splitcharge and winch if you want to have a look before the owner collects it(we're in Larbert).                                                                                                       I run 2 batteries in parallel on my 127, which powers the winch, and use a 100 amp splitcharge to charge the 2 deep cycle batteries in the camper body. Work out what your fitting and its current draw and if the current alternator and wiring is up to the job of powering it all before you start.

i have run with big winches for the last 15 years never bothered with split charge systems, i just double the battery capacity by fitting another the same as the original, from experience a matched pair is the way ahead,
my 110 has 2 winches 3 radios and is covered in flashing lights

Ref 2 or 1 batteries, like Piper5 I also run 2 similar size batteries with no split charge system. I also run a multitude of lights & beacons plus my 2 winches for motor Sport recovery with no battery related problems & have done so for a number of years.
