Td5 Electrics
« on: August 10, 2012, 10:26:25 AM »
2000 Defender Td5
Bulkhead has just been replaced, but now the engine isn't starting. The fuel pump & glow plugs aren't coming on when the key is turned. The engine will turn over. Nor can I set my after market alarm. If this is set the alarm would go rather  than turning the engine over.
I did notice if the key is left in the ignition the alarm sounds, but is turned off by removing the key.
I have checked every fuse, relay and connection and I can't see anything obvious.

Any suggestions before I pull the loom out and start again  :'(

does yours have a 2button key fob ? if so it needs to be near the ignition barrel  otherwise it will imobilise.  maybe you have a problem there.
i think you will get dash lights but no fuel pump or cranking of the starter.

I don't have c/l locking or anything fancy like that. I believe my fob is the not a landy one. The red light in the speedo has never been lit on my car, I have an extra led fitted for alarm setting.
I have read the AS10 (aka the wee green box) unit on the TD5 has a immobiliser function, which the ecu looks for a singal from to see if it can go ahead and start the car.
Going to fit an extra earth wire tonight and try a diagnostic tool.

I had a wee prob with mine when I changed the hinges, I had to disconnect the cable links to the door and when I put it back on the engine would turn over but not start. I locked and unlocked the car twice and the problem disappeared the alarm resets its self if you lock and unlock a couple or three times.

have you tried resetting the crash switch mounted on the engine side of the bulkhead? it has a rubber cap on it & is mounted up beside the air box in that area
Started out with nothing,
Still have most of it left

I got out the big Haynes manual and volt meter, no power to the main relay.
Sooty, you are correct, I found the inertia switch to be faulty. Luckily I had a spare one.
Shes purring away - what a relief
Just a leaky brake pipe and she can go back on the road. Although plenty other bits to  do to keep me busy.
