radius arm rear axle convertion? info needed
« on: June 26, 2012, 08:48:34 PM »
Hi
At the forest estate comp safari I noticed alot of the guys racing had rear axles running radius arms rather than the standard trailing arms. What are the pros and cons to this setup. Further more would a factory 90 chassis accomidate this setup and what parts are needed?. Thanks in advance :).

a common way to build 100" machines and to get maximum axle travel is to make the chassis from two front halfs, ie the back half of the chassis is actually the front of another , thats probably why you see that set up, it also allows for rear mounting of engines etc. ithink its also much stronger

The other story I've heard is that the front radius arms & panhard rod system hold the axle more firmly, compared to rear radius arms & A-frame.

I've heard you get less articulation with this method, but better manners from the car when racing.

.... but I'd certainly agree that the crossmember that holds the A-Frame is right in the way when you want to build a rear-engined racer, therefore you need something other than the A-Frame to locate the rear axle when you go that route.
