TD5 Defender Slight gearbox problem
« on: February 19, 2012, 02:11:12 PM »
Hi all,

When I get  into the cold Landrover in the morning  and try and put it into 1st or reverse it doesnt go into gear and I get a whineing noise, If I then wait 1 - 5 minutes it then goes into gear fine as if its waiting for the oil to warm up. For the rest of the trip the gearbox is fine, its just first thing when the engine is cold.

Does anybody know what causs this and is this an indication that the gearbox is on the way out?

I replaced the gearbox and transfer oil at the end of last year with new stuff as per manufacture specs.

Many thanks,

John

what oil did you put in it, the origional spec in the handbook has been superceded at least once now,
fully synthetic to dextron 3 xyz??? is the minimum now (look at the letters after dex3 cant mind what the spec is)
have a look at difflock.com for their fully synthetic stuff that will probably fix your issues, there was also a post on here a while ago about this if you search back
