Discovery TD5 Gearbox
« on: December 23, 2011, 08:06:53 PM »
Hi to all,
Getting crunching noise changing down to second gear and reverse is sometimes difficult to engage.is it time for a new/reconditioned gearbox? if so can anyone suggest where to get one and rough price guide.
Thank You

try an oil change first , with the correct oil it makes a huge difference on these boxes, the intervals are actually quite short compared to others
theres a breaker in glenrothes who specialises in td5 discos,  bankhead caravans, colin stagerecovery on here has used him

2nd gear synchro on R380 boxes are renouned for weakness.  As someone has already said, get a proper (not cheap) oil and do a change - you might be surprised.  Not sure on the reverse though. . .

I've always used Genuine MTF but have a Google - opinions on oil are like ar$ehole$, everyone's got one!

i have fully synthetic oil from the difflock forum in one and fully synthetic dextron 3 in the other, i think the origonal spec oil has been superceded,  or at least there is now better available
