Steering vibration/wobble..Need advice
« on: December 17, 2011, 10:19:07 PM »
I have a defender 90, I have fitted heavy duty track rods, new track rod ends, new steering drop arm ,new steering damper, wheels are balanced and tracked but I am still getting a serious wobble with major vibration coming through the steering wheel when I accelerate up to 30-40 mph.It feels like the wheels are wobbling as if they are ready to come off.Oh and I have checked that the wheel nuts are tight.Any advice please..  Duncan

I had the same with my disco 1,
I did all you have done and also changed all the bushes for polly but still the same. it went for an mot like that and the mechanic drove it and got the fright of his life when the steering wheel started jumping out of his hands when he hit 50 mph, he informed the mot mechanic who was unable to find anything wrong with it so passed it.
It turned out the top swivel pins were out of adjustment, when I split the steering rods from the hubs I could not find any play at all in the swivels but they had no pre load so I removed some shims and set them as per the book. I did both sides and problem solved. It does over 90 with no problem even after a pot hole its ok.
give it a try.

No problems mate,i am all ready for my mot then I will get the swivel pins sorted, thanks for the offer although I think you would earn better brownie points with the present.I am at work tomorrow and will get into at night as i've been a really good boy and got the present 3 weeks , funnily enough just after I had bought NAS lights for the Toy.Thanks again for the offer.
