Totally agree with your comments on BT, that began waaaaay back in the 80's and thats why I left.
I agree with Gene's take on TT / AOL who are also Tiscali BTW.
Only saving grace about trying to get in touch with BT is that its far easier than talk talk & co.. I took three weeks to get my line fixed and underwent numerous educational phone calls from muppets who knew less than I had forgotten about Telephone engineering
If you are looking for a good deal and good service you can do a lot worse than Plus Net who funnily enough are owned by BT,
Google Broadband Services they have league tables of performance and can show you who has service in your exchange.
