Defender windscreen wipers not completing full arc?
« on: November 15, 2011, 12:14:41 PM »
Hi guys.

Anyone else had a problem with their wipers not making the full arc towards the A post on their Defender?

It's an 03 plate and only completes the full arc about 10% of the time, the rest of the time it goes too far towards the bulkhead and only seems to stop because of the windscreens seal.

Any fixes or advice is appreciated.

Cheers

Anthony

If its moving through enough of an arc to actually do the job then just take it off the splined adaptor on the spindle and replace it a bit further round, as it were. If the wiper arm is all loose and floppy on the spindle then try tightening up the grub nut that holds the adaptor on the spindle. Odds are that its all worn and rocking on the end of the grub-screw- I ended up packing out the gap between the spindle and the ( new !) splined adaptor with a bit of a thin split pin as a shim - a thin nail or similar would do the job.

The older series version, where the wiper arm is held on with a nut on a splined shaft was a far better bit of engineering :-(

I drilled & tapped my arm so a screw clamps it onto the spline.  ;D

Anthony,
I would bet it is the park switch that sits on the top of the wiper motor.
I had it on my 03 Def 90 and also on the Puma.

Costs is about a tenner from Paddocks or others and takes about an hour to do. If you want a hand give me a shout

Hi guys and thanks for the advice. It doesn't seem to be a problem with the wiper arms themselves as it's happening to both and they're solid with no play.

I think Tommy has sussed it because you can hear the switch cutting out rather than the arms struggling or flailing around.

Tommy I'll drop you an email because novice boy here needs all the help he can get.

Thanks guys.
