Sitting outside Ayr waiting for recovery. OS/F wheel all flopping about, oil pouring from swivel. Guess I've a gubbed bearing... :-(

Got it home thanks to RAC. Wheel has almost no 3-9 o'clock movement but some serious 6-12 movement - the top of the wheel really rocks back and fro. I'm taking it that its the top swivel bearing thats away....

Any tips ?  Vehicle is a 96 Reg 300 Tdi 90. It has had both CV joints and wheel bearings replaced in the last couple of years.

....never played with this "preload" thing - whats the score there ?

Cheers,

Gene

I confess I do the bottom bearing without taking the swivel off the car.... but apart from that, its pretty easy...

Thanks for the tips. The hardest part in the end was getting the cotter pin out of the track-rod end - damn thing snapped off leaving nothing to grip... Longish trip tomorrow, so if its not leaking by the time I get back I'll call it a success.
