As it a TD4 there are few engine problems to worry about, just make sure it has been serviced regularly......
Make sure the propshaft is there, some folks remove the propshaft and run them 2wd if there is problems with the VCU and / or IRD.
here are a few 'how to' on you tube for checking the VCU. Probably the quickest way is to get it on full lock and reverse around. The rear wheel on the inside of the turn should still be rotating, if it is scrubbing then the VCU might be on its way out. When reversing on fulll lock it should feel like a brake is dragging very slightly. And the final check is to get one of the rear wheels jacked up off the ground, then with a 24" power bar and a socket on the rear hub nut try to turn the wheel. It should turn smoothly and with a fair bit of force.
Having said that, if the milage is genuine then there will probably be no probs with the VCU, Land Rover recommend replacement at 70k miles. If you want piece of mind then get a recon unit for about ?300 and fit that.
Give it a bit of stick while pulling out from a junction, there should be no banging from the rear. If there is it probably needs new diff mount bushes, or one of the subframe mounts has torn away from the chassis indicating a problem with the VCU.
Other than that, its a Landy, check everthing works including all elec windows, TC and HDC. They dont rust, so np need for worry there......
