TD5 defender Brake disc change
« on: July 24, 2011, 06:42:09 PM »
Hi i'm about to do my brake discs on my td5 90 and heard the hub nuts are different to the old style found on the 300 tdi's as their no longer the 2 nut lock tab arrangement, can i still use the box spanner to set the bearings up and do i require 4x RFD100000 lock nuts to do the disc change ?

My Td5 has a single hub nut with a flange which you tap in to the flat on the shaft which stops it coming un-done. When you come to remove it you need to knock a screw driver in to bring the flange back out. Thus it is advised to replace the nut as this flange can split.

I 'm half way through doing in my job and found the last owner horsed the nut up so tight it bent my bars, I ended up splitting the nut!

Haynes says to use a DTI,
Set nut tension, measure and then change the spacer in between the 2 bearings if needed.

I've not got that far, waiting for a delivery of bits.

If you are only changing the discs and the hub bearings are ok and being reused, just replace hub nut to required torque and peen over. The spacer between the bearings does the job of setting the bearing adjustment, only requires replacement if new bearings fitted are tight or loose.
