changing transfer box disco to 90
« on: June 27, 2011, 09:01:19 AM »
My dad has asked me to stick this up as he can`t find a definative answer.

Were going to be fitting a 200tdi from a disco 1 into his 1989 90 we have the gearbox and transfer from disco aswell

we know we can`t fit the lt77 from the disco as the input shaft i think it is is all wrong length and postion.

Question is can we swap the disco transfer box over to the 90`s lt77 box for better ratios?

Does it work and straight swap and is it worth it?

If they are are both LT230 transfer boxes then all will be well with the 'will it fit' question.

However, if you go to 1.61 ratio, you will struggle on a standard 200tdi if you tow or you have larger than standard tyres.  Personally I wouldn't do it again, unless you are on fast A roads or motorways a lot in which case, why drive a Defender?!?!

Is your 90 a turbo or just a asthmatic 2.5? If it was a turbo leave it as it is what you are looking for as a all rounder.

Origional 90 transfer box ratio should be a 1.4,discovery a 1.2,fitting the 200 tdi and 1.2 ratio into the 90 should not cause a problem unless you have big tyres. If the 90 has big tyres or tows a heavy trailer a 1.7 ratio box helps. To check what ratio is already fitted, engage 4th gear, engage difflock in high box, jack up front and back wheels on one side, release handbrake, turn engine with a socket to take up slack in transmission, mark crank pulley and handbrake drum, rotating engine now 1.4 turns should give one full turn of brake drum, other way is to look at sticky label next to filler plug and see what it says!
