gutless 300 Disco
« on: March 29, 2011, 04:12:59 PM »
Disco comes on the turbo about 2k. has to be revved to pull away in traffic. Not a patch on old 200tdi for bottom end torque. Is this normal or should I be looking at overhaul  turbo or pump? No obvious play at turbo spindle. No oil used. No smoke ( well not much, considering it's LR)

When was the intercooler last flushed? Are the turbo hoses collapsing? What colour smoke are you getting?

Hoses are fine, and smoke was a jokey reference to the startup puff. I've towed someone who reckoned he did not see any smoke over 120 miles.
The 110 with the 200tdi has the exhaust high on the nearside and I have had to warn people away before starting ( friend's mother in white dress leaning on corner of vehicle ;D. Could have cost me, that one)

Did the 110 have a straight through centre pipe? If so the turbo would spool up quicker and be less sluggish off the line.

Has the timing been played with?

Although the turbo pipes look ok they can delaminate so appear ok but the insides are getting sucked in. Also if its done a few miles the Cat could be blocked or chocked worth checking

plain centre pipe so no cat ( its OK it's old enough). Inter pipes have been off and examined recently but I am prepared to flush/check the intercooler and fit new pipes, once it's passed the MOT next week!
Thanks for the tips guys, keep them coming

Is this a new vehicle to you?
(is it a manual one?, i asume it is)

They arnt exactly a ball of fire
 & can be a disapointment over a 200tdi,
maybe try someone elses 300tdi before chasing a lack of go that hasnt ever been there.

Dont know if its the same symptoms but I have just replaced the lift pump on my dads 300tdi and it made a huge difference. at ?19 from the local motor factors its a pretty cheap thing to try first and wont do any harm.
I replaced one on my mates disco a couple of  months ago also with the symptoms of lack of power , loosing revs on hills and not taking the throttle and again it improved the power by a huge amount.

hope this helps
