second battery in a TD5 90
« on: December 27, 2010, 10:53:48 AM »
I'm looking for a photo of the passenger seat battery compartment of a TD5 Defender 90 with two batteries installed. I'm told it is possible to do but I've yet to find out how to do it! I've kindly been sent photos of a Puma 110 and a 300TDi on LRUK but I believe the TD5 90 battery compartment is a different shape and slightly smaller?
The current single battery is the one as supplied by LR when new- large, tall, black, can't see a manufacturer. It takes up a little more than half the room of the compartment and the base of the compartment on the battery side is recessed, with the battery fitting into it (i.e. there is no way of repositioning that battery as the seat won't go back on). I'm guessing the way forward is to find two smaller sized but still powerful enough batteries (or preferably one small one that will fit into the remaining space).
Have any of you done this in a TD5 90?

I can not remember exactly where I got mine (Think the name of the company had "Mud" in the name!) It is a plate and a couple of bits that allow you to fit two batteries under the seat. I have a 57 plate 110 and it worked just fine in there. You could do it yourself with a lump of 3mm plate - all the kit did was to make the base of the box flat so the two batteries can fit. I have a second battery the same size as the standard one that came with the 110. - only thing to watch is the more limited space between the top of the battery and the cover plate. I fitted a sheet of plastic over both batteries just to be sure it does not short.

Cheers, Andy

Thanks Andy.
Devon4x4 assured me it could be done with e.g. two Odysssey 1500s and they have a base plate to fit.
Now to work out how much work is involved in the wiring  :P
