engine bracket need or not?
« on: January 01, 2011, 07:54:34 PM »
Can anyone help me with this? Had to change the head gasket and on finishing the job realised that I had not fitted the rear engine bracket (the one using the head bolts). My question is do I need this or not and will it cause any problems with the engine (apart from using it to remove the engine from the landy)? The manual doesn't mention about putting it back.

Hi
Ok im no engine expert but i have 19j engines one ahs the brackets the other does not. My donor 200tdi has the front bracket but not the rear. My donor 300tdi has none. Really dont know if their vital but all my engines run fine. Hope it helps a little.

Are we talking about the lifting bracket here?

Really not sure tbh but i had to sling an engine strap round the entire block and hoik it oot that way no brackets on my 300tdi or 19j the other 2 engines have em and i still never used em lol.
I dont see why they would be a part of a major gasket but i could be wrong someone will deffiantly know for you.

Ive not yet taken the head off but would think if all the head bolts are the same size then its upto you whether you refit the lifting eyes or not, if the head bolts are longer where they mount the eyes and you dont fit the lifting eye then when you torque down the bolts they might bottom out and whilst being at the correct torque they might not be applying the right pressure if any on the head.
Cant remember if either the lifting eyes are held on with the head bolts tho.

All the head bolts on that side are the same length.

Ok, you will be fine, if there are washers under the rest of the bolts then you will need to fit washers under these aswell.
