winches- beating the VAT rise
« on: December 23, 2010, 10:14:32 AM »
Dear all,
in an attempt to beat the VAT rise I'm spending some money now and intend to get myself a winch and bumper for the TD5 90. This will probably be rarely used apart from in a proposed 3-week overland trip, north Africa, winter 2011/12; and maybe helping out locally in the snow. I think I've settled on a standard LR (with air-con) bumper and a Superwinch but undecided as to a EP9 (independent contactor mounting) or a EPi9 (sealed, integrated contactors), as supplied by FirstFour http://www.firstfour.co.uk/p0/winch--bumper-packages/226839.htm
Any advice? Including if I'm making a mistake and need to go for something different?
Thanks
Paul

 ;)
The thing about the VAT rise from the 4th January is...

If you spend ?1000 now & Vat of ?175.= ?1175

It will rise to ?1000 & Vat of ?200.=?1200

But if you get a good deal or something reduced in Jan/Feb sales,
or free postage,
that could save you more than the extra ?25 VAT
& possibly recieve it quicker than if you buy now.

Just my way of looking at things.

Very good point George.
I've also just discovered that my current insurers won't insure the vehicle with a winch added, so I will need to change.
Looks like waiting until after new year will be a good idea.

Have you considered 1 winch in a Carrying/dismountable mount with a Hitch reciever front & back.

Easily fixed & stored safely in the vehicle.
If you are using Synthetic rope for lightness its kept away safer from theft/vandalisim.
Install your electrics to the front & rear
with recovery points that will also be required for recovery or Double pulls.

Just use when required
 & no Insurance company problems

As a quick example,
www.devon4x4.com
(free postage, not always expensive, deals can be had.
But available from 'Winch Solutions' & many others.

www.superwinch.com

For Insurance, possibly consider a specialist Company that understand 4x4 & travel needs.
eg
www.premiumchoice.co.uk
www.suretermdirect.com

Have fun.

PS, we have a Forum member 'In Scotland' supplying very very good winches.
'Growlz'
& someone with recovery gear, see the bottom of my post. ;)

Adrian Flux has no problem with winch/other mods providing they're declared.

Indeed, both the work landies are with Adrian Flux. I phoned them today and they are happy to insure it. About ?50 more but worth it I think, lower exess, cover for off-road, and as you say mods are no problem.

Are they actually covering the winch against theft/damage?

normally the insurer just recognise that a winch is fitted, but point out that its not covered for theft or replaced in the event of an accident.

I would take pictures & submit them along with the modifications declaration, even if they dont ask for it.
Then check that they can confirm reciept of the pictures.
