Not starting.
« on: December 18, 2010, 06:31:59 PM »
Towed the S2a project & engine  (2.5na) ran. Went for a drive of about a mile all ok. Back to house, in neutral no throttle & engine died. Tried it off the key but battery flat so I charged the battery. But it still wont start off the key ???

I have heard that I may need to have the Lucas CAV pump re-built. Can anyone confirm? Also is there anywhere North Ayrshire which does this?

Hi Ruari, try Johnston & Drynan on West Langlands St. Kilmarnock, they do a lot of the work that Lucas-Kilmarnock did before they closed down, good luck, Neil

If it had been stood for a while then you may have disturbed the gunk in the bottom of the tank. Have a look in the fuel filter, if it's orange with rust or black with rubbish, drop the tank and clean it and all the fuel lines.

Cheers will give the Kilmarnock guys a try.
Fuel lines, fuel filter & tank are all new. The filter in the pump seemed to be clean enough.

before you condem it have you split some joints to see if fuel is getting thru , can you see fuel in the inline filter or the bowl at the lift pump, try cracking open the injector pipes and check for fuel

Hey
When the pipes are cracked, how should the fuel come out as a dribble or a spurt?
Also wondering if the new fuel pipes are suitable. When i operate the hand pump i notice a bubble of air coming from the filter, even though it was bled. I can't get the pump to shift the bubble into the injector pump bleed points :-\
ps. its a 15J so i think it's out a Sherpa van.

bubble     thats air
main fuel pipes should full bore when pumped
inj pipes should spurt when engine cranked
you dont want air bubbles going to the pump or you have to start all over again
whats wrong with the new fuel pipes different size/material if rubber have they reacted to the diesel if the cheep white plastic braided hose they go soft with heat and hard with cold both not good
are you sure you know what you are doing????
all posibilities have to be eliminated
ye they will rebuild your inj pump even if it is not needing it as long as you have the money to gift them

Thanks Graeme
I'm going to ceck that the filter is properly seated and just check fuel connections are all tight and re-bleed.
Fuel pipe was a clear hose which I was told was suitable for the diesel & it was a tight fit with the olives & inner sleeves.
