Buy the best 300 tdi you can buy. Easy to fix if your handy with a spanner. Lots of spares about and you dont need a computer to fix things apart from abs

Hi Scott,
as Douglas says, a good 300tdi is probably the best bet but be very careful what you buy. Rust is the big enemy and Disco's of this age are very unlikely to be completely free of it. Check the chassis, lift the carpet and the rubber mat in the rear load area and check the floor, they are notorious for rusting and expensive to replace. Also have a good look around the sills and under the 'A' posts under the front doors, open both rear side doors and check for rust on the curve of the wheel arch. And don't forget to look under the bonnet and check the tops of the wheel arches.Don't buy any Series one or two Disco without looking at that rear floor area.
For your budget, you should be able to get a nice one, just be careful.
Good hunting!

having just spent 9 hours welding a 300tdi disco wouldnt have on ein a gift these days be very wary of rust in the cills behind the plastic and boot floor , for me it would be a td5 lower end model with no sunroofs and springs instead of airbags

td5 every time for me but take someone who knows about them there is some dogs about as well
a good idea is whatever your budget keep back ?500 for toys or repairs, rarely does anyone sell a car without some problems big or small, if it was perfect why sell it?

go have a drive of a 300 and a td5, is it for everyday use? offroad/ towing? how capable are you of fixing them
td5  have more electronics but theres tons of stuff on the web and generally they don't give problems, high?er spec one can give lots of issues with ace, airsuspension etc, generally if something fails fix it straight away it won't be too bad if you leave it then it will damage more like air /ace pumps then you can spend thousands on repairs that need specialist equipment

where you located about?
