Swivel + Wheel Bearings
« on: July 26, 2010, 09:30:23 PM »
Is there any easy way of doing these with basic tools, or do you need a press?

hi,

this depends on the vehicle,

ive done it on my 110 without any special tools.
(swivel bearings, railko bush, and wheel bearings)

my disco II has the hub as a complete unit, so replacing bearings is a "new hub unit pain in the ****",
the swivel is ball joint type things, and i've never done them.....

cheers,

you can do the job without a press it just takes a bit of time and efert to tap the old bearing out and get the new one in

or you could take the hubs off and take them to some a gararge with a press and ask the to pop the old ones out and the new ones in
carnt imagin they would want mutch fo that

I've just replaced my swivel & cv joint. So I did the wheel bearing's at same time. (Defender 110)
You will need the special socket for the wheel nut, also 12pt sockets.
I did the bearings myself without a press, just took my time.
Swivel - does it need doing. If you can get away with just the seal, it would be much quicker. Take the back plate off, cut away the seal. cut the new seal fit it with the joint at the top.  One shot grease.
For photoguide, check out landyzone, and look for buster bus.
Enjoy

Thanks for the advice guys.

Good chance I will remove the bits and get a garage to do it, we'll see.

ruaritreble - not sure how bad the swivels are, but I intend to fit new brakes, bearings and CV's, so might as well do it while Im there.

You don' t need a press if your changing the swivel housing, stick the housing in the oven 100 degrees for 1/2hr and the bearings in the freezer.
The bearings should just fall in. allow to cool outside
Used this method last week on my series, but can't be much different in your new fangle motor
Remember to wear oven gloves.
Best do it when the wife out or she'll think your cooking dinner
i suppose if you use the old swivels housings, you need to drift out the old bearings and clean the grease by using her dishwasher .
Three appliances in one day she will be impressed.

Brillant Must remeber that for next time.
I've heardyoucan make your ownone shot grease. A mixture of oil & grease ( don't use any old stuff) mix together with the food blender. ;)

So that's how it's done!
You take the swivel OFF the axle before you try to stick it in the oven.
I couldn't get the flamin' oven door to shut and she was greetin' for a week about the rusty crud and EP90 all over the kitchen floor.
These forums are great fer gettin' tips an that!

Seriously I rebuilt my series front axle a couple of years back and didn't use any special tools or domestic appliances. Never had any difficulties at all.

Dave

PS; We tip. You can heat a starter ring gear using the four burners on the gas cooker, heats it nice and even so it drops onto the flywheel a treat. Dinna drop it on the kitchen lino when its hot though or it becomes an expensive and painful job. I was that man and still carry the scars to this day. My wife can lash you with her tongue and draw blood from 30 feet.  :o
