Rear wheel bearings
« on: January 15, 2015, 05:51:08 PM »
Looking to replace these as iv a slight leak on one side have been told better to do them as a pair?
Question is what ones do I get do they all fit standard disco and defender

I have a 1988 90 but only had it about 4 years how can I tell if it is the original 90 axel or been replaced over the years with a disco one.
Any pointers and advice welcome

Thanks for your time guys/gals

Not sure about your axle but I would assume the leak is down to hub seals rather than bearings but best replace both when you have it stripped, easy enough job I've just done mine. If you have an iPhone download LR-Parts app it's quite good for part numbers etc

Hi just had a quick look, rear axles on the defender & discovery look like the same set up was used in most  models so I would assume part number are the same.

Worth buying a box spanner for the hub nut , gasket sealant, bearing grease and thread lock. Also while hubs are off it might be worth putting new discs and pads on

Personally, I think the "do as a pair" refers to both bearings in one hub rather than both hubs on an axle unless they are both ancient when it may be worth doing both. Its a fairly simple job once you have done once or twice, and as Stephen said, a leak is the seal not the bearing.

Thanks for the replies I thought there was a rubber seal on the bearings also? But I guess I'll be able to have a look once I get into it

There is a seal (or two) but they are separate from the actual bearings.

earlier hub seals are a 'plain' U shape, but later types have a moulded on lip.

(Sorry my technical library cells don't remember the exact date/model changeover period).

There are two bearings in each hub.... and you replace both when you do a hub.

To remove the rear bearing, you need to remove (and therefore want to replace) the "hub oil seal.

Most parts are interchangeable across the axles (Defender, Disco 1, RRC) however the locking washer (that stops the hub-nuts from undoing) has 2 forms.... and if you can't re-use it then you need the right version...
