Long Shot
« on: September 21, 2014, 08:49:48 PM »
This might be a long shot but would anyone happen to have a left hand tap to fit a HD steering rid. The threads are damaged in mine but my local guy doesnt have one and they are a fortune to buy?

Cheers

Track rod end thread must be a "Landrover" size as a tap and die set never has a matching thread. Origional Sumo bars made by Martin Speck had 2 right hand threads until he aquired a left hand tap which he said he had had  specially made.  On the other hand do you really want a steering component with a damaged thread?.

As you are restoring a thread you could make your own taps out of old track rod ends.  PM or phone me if you want to try that.

Thanks both,

The threads aren't too bad to be honest. I've also tried using an old tie rod with grinding paste but think it needs machined. Took it to a place but they never had the proper kit.

Hi Stephen, if thread just needing cleaned, get an old rod end, cut 2 or 3 spiral flutes in it with a hacksaw, this gives any swarf some where to go, screw that in same as using a tap,ie back and forward, lubricating with oil.

What kind of band has spiral flutes in it & what kind of music do they play?

True, definitely a market for them at the right price.

Get me some orders and I'll consider it 😉
