Is it timed up ok?

The easiest might be to give it a quick tow.  I had to do that with my Disco when it ran out of fuel.

I think it's pump timing no woodruff key so just made it as near as my eye could go. Is there a proper way to check ???

Thanks Bill

Hi interested in any help peps put on this as having same probs and only got her firing when I gave her a light spray of easy start I know some say a burning rag or hot air gun to the intake but it worked for me but I still have to get my timing to pump sorted also , it started after I replaced the cav the marking facing at three o'clock position and tried 1* degree anti each time and no sufferance then opposite ended up putting it back to the three o'clock position where it sounds and runs its best but still won't start on the key only still needs easy start at first but once running and hot starts on key no prob , bar checking my glow plugs to see if they are all okay I'm stuck.

Bill,

Do you have the locking pin for the pump? If the timing is correct, the pin should just slide straight in. If its out the pin is very stiff or will not locate.  ;D

line up the timing marks on the crank pulley, then take the small round plate off the timing cover in front of the pump , you then put a pin in there to line it up, its someting like a 7mm pin, a drill bit will do if you are carefull and dont try rotate the engine with the pin in place or you will snap it.
if you have changed the pump without locking the timing i would check all the timing again as if you were fitting a new timing belt you may have moved the timiing belt a tooth out or something along those lines

did you undo the nut in the middle of the pump sprocket or did you undo the 3 small bolts holding the drive pulley on & left the centre piece on the pump,

if you undid the nut in the centre & removed the drive sprocket of the pump you will have most likely lost your position for the timing, this can be set but needs the use of a dti etc, easiest way is to take the pump to a diesel specialist & have them time it up & refit the drive sprocket in the correct place
Started out with nothing,
Still have most of it left

Timing pin size for injection pump is actually 9.5mm, slot in flywheel that has to line up with drain hole is about 3mm,a suitable bolt with the tip ground to a point does the job. BUT !!! how did you remove the pump? As Sooty described if you undid the pump drive flange off the shaft you have to get the pump retimed.  To remove the pump without opening up the whole front belt cover the other way is to use a special tool to clamp the pump drive sprocket to the front case, this keeps the belt under tension and lets you remove the pump and not disturb the timing.
