Defender 200TDi or 300TDi
« on: March 16, 2014, 05:26:18 PM »
Hi,

I'm looking to change vehicles (Discovery TD5) to a Defender 200TDi or 300TDi but can't decide what engine to try and go for.

The 200TDi is getting very old now and was not in production for long. Will parts start getting scarce soon?

What's the general thoughts? I know there will be diehards for both engines.

Thanks

As the newer engine the 300 should be better, but both will serve very well. I would say overall condition of the car is far more important than which of these engines, you may miss a very good car by limiting your search. Personally I would also go for one that was built with the engine fitted rather than a Heinz 57 which has had a different engine put in.

Well said there are arguments for both but both are good engines. I would avoid dodgy convertions

  • I'm not completely daft. Some pieces are missing.

Both are pretty bombproof and similar performance - strangely the 300 Tdi gets slightly worse mpg than its older brother I believe ?

300Tdi probably the better bet long term for the reasons you've already stated.
