Title: Spluttering TD5
Post by: ttuck3r on March 02, 2013, 08:53:48 PM
This is the second time i've had her out and i've noticed when driving normally she is perfect but under heavy acceleration she splutters, i have accelerated through the splutter on gears 3rd an 4th it then goes away for the duration of the journey and returns at next start up.

i was wondering if it was maybe my waste gate solenoid?

Thanks in advance..

Check the red plug on Ecu under drivers seat and check for oil ingress , this is caused by injector wiring harness this can cause white smoke and miss firing 30 pounds will get you a new harness for inside rocker cover

If it gets worse I would try somewhere with diagnostics like es altenators in Kirkintilloch or ask someone on here for a loan of a nanocom or hawkeye

try the airflow meter located on between airbox and hose to the turbo, disconnect and see if it makes a difference also check the wastegate actuator remove the turbo heat shield pop the clip off the rod and see if you can move the rod freelyif not the wastegate will be sticking causing overboost have experienced both these issues with my td5
cheers

A word of caution, before you "pop the clip"  as per Deisel Jock's advice tie a piece of thread to the clip, it can be very elusive once you pop it off. Take this from one who has the T shirt.

Sounds like the syptons we had when the EGR valve went on out wee car. You can blank it off, rather than buying a new one.
Find a nanocom it should give you a fault code.

did actually forget to mention about the clip being a bit elusive lol

Purchased a new injector loom/harness today, stripped it down and ATV glued every single hole, cavity i could find shut and hopefully install it in the next week or so..

This maybe doesn't entirely fit your symptoms, but I had terrible problems with my TD5 cutting out, misfiring and running rough - I traced it back to a corroded earth-strap between the floor and chassis that was giving the ECU a bad earth.  In the end, I ran a new wire from the battery negative to one of the ECU mounting bolts and I haven't had a problem since...

Thank you very much i will be having a look at that to, but due to bad weather and work a haven't done my injector loom yet even though its not been that bad recently.

after changing the injector loom you will still get a bit oil at the red plug till it comes outthe rest of the loom, so dont be worried if you see more oil just clean it a couple more times.

Thanks for the info that would make sense now you said it, i probably would have been a bit concerned seen oil after a new loom and ive RTV glued every nook an cranny i could find.

I would go for replacing the wiring loom far easier than you may think, got the advice from this forum.

Fitted new injector loom and gasket, cleaned out the oil on the ecu side, waxoyled the engine bay and every plug got cleaned an dielectric grease blasted through. i will report back on results..

Well we still have a splutter and ive cleaned out the MAP sensor on the manifold, next items to check are the MAF sensor and wastegate im thinking.

Just a thought ........... but a month or so it seems from the repair to today's post of spluttering.
When doing this repair the ecu connector often needs cleaned after a month as the residual oil in the loom makes its way down. I use an aerosol brake cleaner as it cleans and then evaporates.
Did you remove the ecu and stand it on its end for a while to allow oil to drain out?
Good luck.

Aye thank you, ive had the ecu out every fortnight to give it a clean and the ecu ive had completely stipped down, there was no oil inside..

Change your maf sensor. I had a similar issue with mine. Around 2,500 rpm.

Well i think the splutter is gone, went for a drive and she seems to be pulling a lot better too.
I got a new MAF sensor but once i replaced it i also gave the wastegate another push pull to find it was completely jammed up, so i sprayed a combination of GT85 and WD40 until it released and now all seems to be running sweet.

Below is a list of replaced/fixed parts that got me to the end eventually.

1st was the cleaning out of the ECU which had oil sat in the red plug
2nd was the replacement of the injector loom which had oil ingress right through and the ecu has been cleaned out every fortnight since
3rd A new fuel filter and fuel return hose was replaced due to rust on the filter and leaking hose.
4th MAP sensor on manifold was removed and thoroughly cleaned out
5th MAF sensor replaced
6th the wastegate released as it was jammed

Hope this can help someone else

Second MAF sensor in 11 months, what the heck!
I did notice when removing the Sensor there was two burnt bugs caught in the mesh so im wondering if this could have been the fault...
