10 spline or 24 which is stronger?

someone told me 24 spline are stronger. Just wondering if this was the case.

cheers Bill

The 24 splines are stronger at the splined part (more splines so torque force is spread over more contact areas).

However the rest of the unit is no different to a 10 spline diff as far as I am aware. Its still a 2 pin design.

I would have thought you are more likely to snap halfshafts before doing much damage to the diff or splines, not sure though.

I know mine has a 24-spline 4-pin diff on the rear as it is a factory fitted V8. It was fitted with heavy duty half shafts too before I changed the axle for a disco unit. Kept the strong diff though.

Having broken plenty 10 spline diffs in the past, the problem usually started in the planet gears, the cross shaft lubrication dries up during wheelspin, the shaft would seize onto the planet gear, twist off,the bits would be picked up by the crownwheel and be fired out through the rear of the axle casing making a hole big enough to put your hand in. All this in a second or two! 24 spline diff planet gears are made to a slightly different design,so far so good! I think the answer is a lighter right foot and try not to be on the power when gravity returns  over  the top of a steep climb.

Another case of keeping the right foot in close contact with the wallet!
