Title: Shell Fuel Save
Post by: badger12 on September 21, 2010, 02:18:19 PM
Anyone tried it? (petrol or diesel)

Did you get an extra litre of mileage out of your tank?

...or did your landy run rough?

Know someone who has problems with there car on th petrol. Won't know until after the weekend when the fuel system is drained and cleaned, but it runs well on LPG but awful on petrol. It was ok before the stuff was used.

did use shell optimax years ago with my astra. it did run faster with the better fuel
although added redex additive to freebie diesel and it ran rough as hell. wont be putting that in again thats for sure

guess it depend what motor its in. an older landie engine was designed to run on almost any standard fuel. new engines got tighter tolerances so maybe wont like 'fancy' fuel, prefer the normal stuff

pains me to say it, but Doug could be right. My surf is that old I can apparantly run it on chip fat oil and just change the fuel filter. I'm too scared to try and the smell of chips going along the m8 would drive me crazy lol

Shell only tested this fuel on 'newer' cars - up to 5 years old (?)

Mines 14.

My Mums 6 yo Jazz didnt like it either, neither did a friends' diesel merc (R reg I think)....

Cant remember all thats been checked/done/flushed/etc in the last 2 days, but the result is categorically, that there is nothing wrong with my engine and the fuel from Shell has caused the recent problems.

Interestingly we put some of the fuel drained out into a clean glass jar and there is a) a funny smell - bit like turpentine, and b) there is a bubble of something at the bottom of the jar - looks like something you see in a lava lamp....

My D1 V8 petrol/lpg is now purring like a pussy cat again  - cant wait to go for a run in the morning.

maybe not the fuel save thats the problem, maybe its a bad batch of fuel

That maybe so, but either way it was the fuel I bought from Shell. Thats down to them to sort out - cant believe its a bad batch of fuel cos problems have been reported from all over the country. More like a bad batch of their additive....

Has anyone tried adding 250ml of 2-stroke oil JASO FB or FC to diesel tank. Works very well.

Google  "diesel- 2 stroke" and you will get lots of info as to why this works.

Been using it for a while now in Freelander, 3-5mpg improvement.

For the first year I owned it I ran my TDV8 Sport on Supermarket fuel, after an incident with contaminated fuel I started to fill up with Shell or BP. Twice I paid the extra for the premium/ extra/V-Power brand of those majors when I was running down to Southampton and back - I could get about 5-6mpg better on those trips than compared to running on supermarket fuel. When Shell started sell the new formula I switched to that all the time and got 3-4mpg consistently. K am now running a 2010 TDv8 L322 Range Rover, which admittedly has a higher 6th gear than the Sport had but it also doesn't like to go into sixth below 56mph whereas the RRS was happy to shift up at 50mph, since taking deliverey I have only ever put Shell ordinary diesel from one of the 2 Shell garages in Stirling and I have to be trying very hard to get the trip average mph below 30mpg on runs from home into Stirling and back (16 miles each way) - maybe its the fuel, maybe it's the slightly different engine mapping but in the Sport on the same run I had to be trying very hard to better 28mpg

TS came and got fuel samples last Monday - will know results in a week or so....

They admitted it smelt funny and was a strange colour (not being a petrol connesseiur  (SP?) I wouldnt know but the chap said he'd put shell diesel in his car and its engine management light had come on and it wouldnt go faster than 20 mph! It did eventually clear but he thought he was going to get stranded...

...watch this space!

Funny I put some unleaded in mine just to have something in the petrol tank (runs on LPG). Filled up at a Somerfield garage (was the nearest!) and I have to say the fuel smells funny, seems oily to the touch and just generally isn't like normal petrol! That said the car runs absoloutely A OK so not sure what that is about? ???
