Stripped out old oil pump in my S3 and put replacement in , filled her up with oil and charged the battery and hay presto shd fired into life and all was well fit about five mins and she's back to how she was before bellowing bout smoke , I have a replacement one coming on wednesday (cheers smiffy) so over next week or so it will be strip him out and get her in so I have my landy in use again.
Then its strip down time when I get space to find out exactly what is wrong and get it fixed so gave a Spair going forward for both landys if I ever need one again and hints on how to store it far keep it indoors and oil down the cylinders ?
Cheers

Well its certainly a bit damp here today. The main road to town is closed due to flooding just north of Callander and the river has burst its banks all over the place.

Had to go and have a look-see....

 8) you know that feeling you get that something is just not right and it isn't until you see or read somewhere it hits you what it is well it just happened to me,
My S3 always seemed to run hot , great heater thought nothing of it until now as had striped thermostat housing of and no thermostat was in place!!!! The engine was knackered and it was a PO bodge to keep it running cool by taking it out just long enough for me to have the engine pop on me no wonder it ended up smoking like a battleship it explains so much .
At least I now have a load if parts and a new engine(second hand checked)  can't wait to see the innards to see why it been budged by PO and now I can say ahhhhhhhh haaaaaa !!!!

P***** off by the 3rd windscreen wash nozzle in a year snapping off in the frost ....and being a pain to fit a new one unless you have treble joined 9in long fingers....   so I've re-routed the wash water to two twin nozzles mounted on the bonnet. Far better coverage on the windscreen, 45 minutes work and all the components involved cost £10 more than another rubbish LR nozzle.

I often wondered how the hell they would be done as have two new ones and need to replace the drivers one but with what you have done sounds far better way to go and a great idear cheers gene for the way to do it ( head now gone into rest mode ) something else to do .

Just take care to experiment with where the jet will land. Nozzle too close to the bulkhead will mean the jet does not go high enough. My nozzles are now about 4 inches in front of the hinge plate.

Got rid of the leaky rectangle reverse and fog light renewed the wiring and installed the round lights, with adding some aluminium plate, this offers some rigidity for my drop down ladder to sit on.

Spent all day trying to work out why the injectors aren't getting fuel , checked all lines , bleed everything but still no fuel to the injectors ????? Read and re-read the manual and everything seems connected up right I just can't figure it out, so disconnect everything from cav and put on one from my engine before and hay presto she fire up but soon died as must of been enough fuel in her at least I know the engine runs, anyway all I can think of is I have the top and bottom pipe wrong way connected to fittings so on Monday / Tuesday will swap them over as I think this is it well laters

Forgot to say how I got it running, when putting on the cav injector it fits on a spindle cig a certain way so it must be lined up so managed to get it out of engine the cig bit and turned each so they would line up when put together hard bit worked out using grease to hold the spindle cog in cav first helped locate it into engine and way ho it works and squirtling fuel this also ment I now had to tune it up this is where it becomes problem matic , blue smoke grrrr anyways read if you advance or retard the cav it can reduce or clear the smoke by turning it one degree at a time, well tried both directions and no difference bar engine either races or near cuts out so set it in between where least smoke was coming out, then again reset all the points and still no difference , back to manual and read upon forums by sounds if engine and looks it could now be valve steam seals so have done homework to find out how to do them so that's next task .
Also have to drop gear box out to check clutch as it's not disengaging so have that to do also now Grrrr who said it would be easy lol by end of this I will open up a small garage and start fixing others ascwill have the equipment and knowlege and experience of doing it lol
Anyways it's late and needctovtry get some sleeep laters
Cheers

If it's been sitting for a while clutch plate might just be stuck to flywheel. I had that problem on old series, wheeled it up against  SUBSTANTIAL wall pushed clutch peddle to floor and tried to start it, after a few tries it freed off.

^^^^ A rather simpler job..... Robbed the foam from one seat back to replace the gubbed foam in another as part of making up two good matching seats from 4 assorted ones. Turned out to be easier than I thought. The seat back peels off like a pillow case, just a sort of plastic zip-lock do-da at the bottom to deal with. The foam inside is glued to the metalwork but with a bit of careful separation it came off without damage.

Success , got the gear box back in lol it was a lot harder then I anticipated it would be , scissor  jack under engine to life it at the bell housing , crane with precision placed rope and tie loop wire , plus trolley jack , jumping on it, went through two litres juice, two of the fake fags cartoniser and woolaa it slips into place and slow lower it lines up perfect for its mounts I take a sigh of relief at last, once all bolted and tightened into position took out jet wash and yep I jet washed it so all the gunge and oil from the old engine is washed of her and amazingly its got a silver casing lol feeling proud of my progress I even put seat box back in after it been undercoated and sealed ready to tighter up and Finnish tomorrow fingers crossed again as still to see if it works yet lol

John, you got predictatext on? Took some deciphering :)

Sorry on a lot of med's, plus not the greatest at writing or spelling my apologies, I'm better working with my hands than writing , :-(
But that said I had my landrover started yesterday woo hoo
That's after I had to change the knackered starter!! And then purchase a new battery.
Outcome still smoking so today back to basics , new injectors(reconditioned) timing and cav adjustment will hopefully be the cure if not I'm ready to give up and dig deep into pocket's to send her to landrover hell my local but good garage who charge a fortune to get her fixed.
One last thought I hadn't thought of may be her timing chain? Could this cause her to smoke also??? Have got a new chain so something else I could try also.
Anyways apologies to all for my way of writing and spelling if its causing a problem ill stop my stories and quietly sit back and read what others are doing.

Got 300tdi into my 1972 series 3. Chopped the front panel a bit to get discovery radiator and td5 intercooler mounted in front, played with hose and pipe to plumb it together. Got to take it all out again to fully weld engine mounts, fit new seals, clutch and timing belt, might get front panel and bulkhead galvanised when it's in bits..... Got 11 inch drums to fit to front axle, rear parabolic springs, new brake shoes/cylinders/pipework then nearly done!
Need to get creative with the disco exhaust to make a nice side exit pipe, but will need to pack a bag and head offshore again tomorrow.

Help need a Diesel engine the one I bought of here from a member you know who you are is a dud I have tried everything to stop it smoking , replaced-
Injectors, stem seals, ground tappets, change oil, new filters, new gasgets, change starter motor , new battery, change cav and host if other stuff,
So unless I have missed something its a dud in my book and got experience from it all never to trust somebody selling a engine here unless I see it running first!!!!! Oh and had to do clutch also.
I am totally gutted after all this time I have spent doing this I'm just not fit I think to do it again!!

When the engine was stripped were the bores ok? Did you fit new rings and gap them properly? If the pump timing isn't right it'll smoke, slacken the 3 hold down bolts on the pump, start it up and rotate the pump when running to find the optimum point. Too advanced and it'll knock, too retarded = white reek.... Worth a try?

all the bores where  not touched these looked great have been told to do the timing chain as cant get any difference when adjusting the cav so chain next.

yesterday took advantage of getting home early, i fitted all new brake discs and pads plus last reaming bearing hub to Saab which has been waiting for over a month to be done so its complete and ready for its mot soon, the weather today is crap and that's me being polite so dug out cav pump and set it up according to manual so it ready to install bat that have to wait for weather to improve.
My other landy the S2A i finished of the drivers front dumb iron repair it needed and quiet impressed with the results and today marked up sheets ready for cutting for other side but again delivery of my cutting discs haven't arrived grrrr and just because back sore from yesterday also having rest of day resting up and hope weathers better tomorrow.
its at times like these i wish i had a double garage to work in just so frustrating having to reply on our Scottish weather to be able to work outside.
anyways later all

looking at your picture it looks like white smoke??? if so thats a fueling issue rather than blue oil smoke.
i had one of these about fifteen years ago that did this, in the end a guy from the dockyard who worked on old diesel engines sorted it, he basically timed the pump by listening to the engine and turning the pump, according to the book it was a mile out .
get an old school diesel mech to look at it, find someone into old tractors or the like.

also is there a chance you have fixed it and the exhaust is full of unburnt fuel or oil

hi i agree its a fuel/timing problem, have got anther cav ready to install set by the book but as the engine is a unknow i am doing the timm
ing chain also so setting it all by the book basically back to zero and starting from there and hope to get it sorted this way.

Well the weather been shall we say bad!! Lol and its stop me doing the series3 so got stuck into doing the S2a chassis repairs and have finally finished all the welding that I can see or found needing done. Then from rear to bulkhead i have given it a coat of chassis paint, which I really drenched it in lol , halve of it on me and my glasses , thought I was seeing black spots before me everywhere till I took them off lol , well have to say its looking promising and good so far, tomorrow will start getting what's needed done to get the tub back on and work on that so my fav word is - anyways, laters and cheers

On the 2a worked in stripping the tub down , lights, covers, old bolts and sanded off flacky paint, took off all old retaining strips fir seals as they are non exsistant then painted it ready fir measure up and fitting of aluminium checkered plate then its ready to reattach to chassis and paint then wire up again.
Well that's me knackered so resting up fir rest of night

At last the de-construction has ceased and the assembly begins.
Bulkhead sound proofed last night, replacement engine and gearbox bolted in hopefully for the final time.
Now to work out some wiring to bring the old girl to life.
Title: Re: what did you do with your landy in 2014

Well got to check the timing chain and its great like brand new abet a little slack on runner guide but once cleaned up and reassembled its gone nice and tight?!? I thought since I bought a new chain I would fit it! Ah if life was so easy it only a link to long :-( said it was and checked for my 88 2 1/4 diesel oh well unless I can take a link out its no good to me now so all bolted back up and to how book said . Just cav and radiator to put back in oh and sump, oil and coolant etc then hopefully it will be fixed or just tweaked to get it running without smoke if not I give up and need a new engine. So if you have a diesel 2 1/4 - 2.5 l one that your willing to part with and doesn't smoke hold on I may need it.

Shiny new Radiator in the 90, no issues other than a jubilee clip on the bottom hose, hard to get at and rusted. I oiled it and used a lump hammer to knock the head round to where I could get at it....  All up and running now :-)

It's all bolted back together according to the book and have filled it up with oil and water, turned her over and zip she demands her battery to be charged as drained it last time and I forgot :-( anyways on with charger and will try it tomorrow and fingers crossed the smoky is fixed or now can be adjusted enough to stop it now.
Cheers

??? Well went to turn over the S3 and she's wanting too but not starting to point drained battery, check all fuel lines, bleed it , used some and small amount of easy start but she just won't fire up herself, will check all injectors etc tomorrow and try again, she was hard to start before but sounds like if no fuel getting in so first check is cav to see if its pumping oh well down but not out.
My S2a got its check straps fitted to it after I made four new brackets for them and trip to B/Q for new bolts as run out again. I also fitted its first shock absorber as she had none when I got her so bar doing other side she will be ready to have her tub refitted soon.
Anyways that's all fir now .
Cheers

Feeling rather stupid again lol, I done what I already worked out when putting the cav pump injector back on, I forgot to take the sproket and fit it to the cav first. the engibe it does work but the cav pump is not connected in order to rotate to pump diesel to engine hence it not starting again, bar that got tub back on the S2a, i have the rear section complete and took all the self tapping bolts out and replaced them with rivets. it looks so better and there flush so getting there slow but sure.

Have a look at the For Sale section for my trials / comp project if your interested

Loks like a nice project for someone but I full up have two already keeping me busy hope someone out there snaps it up soon, well got my S3 to dirt if run I think my cav pump is faulty as when started will run at idel as long as peddle pressed full to floor? Didn't have this problem before but have a Spair cav which wil try tomorrow , on the S2a bolted her tub in place and started to sand down its panels swapping between the two so can sit and do one and stand doing other till legs plays up just incase someone wondered why I'm jumping between the two .

I'm ready to say the engine (name withheld) sold me is a dud and I can't get her to work but have learned a lot in trying, so all I can do now is ask if anyone has a 2 1/4 Diesel engine for sale that I can see running or have one that they know is good and no longer require. If anyone can assist me in my quest to get my S3 back on the road I be most gratefull. Please note money wise I'm near skint so if dear may have to wait a couple months to get paid !

Fabricated heavy duty mid body outriggers. And general other tweaks and adjustments. Its been dry stored for the last 2 odd years. Need it on the road the petrol 90 far to dear to use as a daily drive. Once done on to the next landrover its a never ending joy...... Love them really honestly.

Pity weather wasn't that great but it just added to the day making some parts of the course nice and muddy , and a bit hairy as the driver taking me round and I found out as at one point we where sliding down at a very scary angle.
Anyhow look at fantastic weekend was being had and very well attended event look forward to when I can partake in the next event if I get her working .
For now its back to strip out old and await a new engine so laters all.

Doing a bit of a trip tomorrow to dump and mates just to give her engine a good thrash to clear her throat out see how she fairs for it, bar that its back to work on the other one now which runs okay so don't need a engine for  her thank god , so laters all keep posting what your up to

Yesterday had my mate pop down who is on the search to buy a landrover lwb to take with him to morrocoo and wanted a shot in mine as he has only ever driven new types so I took him for a drive to garage to top up fuel and laughed to myself at every corner he was hanging on with both hands and his faced said it all lol I assured him it won't roll and its perfectly safe but still the dash to grab the hand rail at front still happened lol
Anyway gave him a shot along the private bit of road and back and he was astonished at it handling and its turning circle , I said just drive it it won't brake ( fingers crossed ) as he carefully tried to reverse it he was worried it would get scratched lol I kept saying reverse into the bushes if you want it won't hurt it eventually he managed to get her round and was surprised at no power steering and there turning circle but he enjoyed it so I took over and we went fir a wee drive to my mates house fir coffee and back which he loved anyways what I did find out is my clutch is slipping badly so tomorrow its replacement time .

Tomorrow she and two other vehicles are getting there mots done so got this sorted just in time, the old clutch disc was shinny on both sides where it had been slipping against the flywheels and could be saved as a Spair by roughing the shin off but that's anther job fir a later date, well if tomorrow goes well its back to work on the S2a as she is coming along slowly and is starting to look like a landrover again so untill next time

well haven't really done much bar got round to waterproofing the canvas roof on the s2a project and replaced the entire exhaust on the s3, oh and have a idiot audi tt driver try his luck with me, but i had my camera in and quickly switched it on and recorded whole of his reckless driving where, three times it shows him trying to get me to ram into him due to him slamming his brakes on, bad news is for him the police now have the video of it all and are going to be chapping at his door lol,  so basically get a car camera and have it going all the time to catch these idiots out there lol. Best bit of kit i ever bought for the landy.

New rear cross member fitted the day.

If that was one of the better quality ones i never want to see a paddocks special. Some amout of butchering went on.

Also lurch , your not near aberdeen are you ? Just there is an idiot tt driver going round here doign similar and getting out and intimidating folk with road rage.

Scratch that . I see your west lothian .... Must just be the tt drivers creed to be idiots

Hi it may be him his reg. is very hard not to miss its a three letter word followed by tt and is a white Audi but like you said I think they all are owned by boy racers whom have the idear that they have the right to drive anyway they wish cause they own one, well as I said I caught him on my car camera doing his very reckless driving and the police have it and still heard nothing.
I saw on eBay same camera as mine going fir £14 so may get a couple more so can have a rear facing one also ?
Anyways sounds like your having fun doing your weld hope it went well. All I managed was waste a few hrs trying to get generator to work and ended taking to lawn mower place to have a look.
Anyways drive safe out there and give me a wave if you see me will get you on film lol.

Got 90 MOT'd after a summer refurb. Purchased in April, what could have been faulty, rusty or broken was. So it's been a long haul but well worth it. Best driving Land Rover I've been in. Sound of V8 just adds to the fun. looking forward to making use of it, according to MOT logs it's only done 2000 since 2006. I think it has been sitting at the bottom of a farmers cess pit the state it was in. If anybody know motor would be good to hear if that was true, it is blue county and it had a TAZ graphic on the bonnet D25POE definitely used off road so someone's bound to know some history.  :D

Stripped the SU carbs on my V8 90, everything looked in good order, albeit a bit clatty, a tin of carb cleaner later and all back together with fresh oil in the dash pots and a new choke cable.
I used 20/50 engine oil this time as opposed to 3 in 1 oil that I usually use
It fired up quicker than normal with a noticeable difference in engine note, as soon as I pulled out the drive I could tell there was a big improvement, much smoother and sharper response, flat spot at low revs has gone and more beans on the motorway, it's also running at a normal temp, where previously it was running cool no doubt due to mixture.
So all in all a productive morning just need to get a carb balancer do dah and set them up properly  ;D

Fitted the rear parabolics on my series 3 looks now it sits better than the flat originals! Took the seatbox out to repair the cubby box bit. Loosely hung the replacement rear door that is to replace the rotten one that came with it and fitted the van sides on hardtop.

Will hopefully get the rotten bulkhead out before xmas...

Sprung a leak in the thermostat valve tap and the housing plus pipe leading into heater matrix from last breakdown , well yesterday got out to fix it all, replaced vale tap with spair I had from other engine, cut and fitted new gashget to side ,tightened up clip hose, welded hole to retap thread fir thermostats bolt but don't think I have it right yet but on test run not town she held and no leaks I could see so fingers crossed that's er till better weather appears or I get her in the garage if I get chance to move all the vehicles about bar that GGR day tomorrow and swmbo is coming along  ::) this will be interesting she will either love it or hate it , fingers crossed she loves it as woud be financially beneficial to restoration and on going repairs  8)
Anyways those who are going see you there and those not hopefully will get pics up after to see what you missed.
Oh if you see me honk or get behind me and push lol
