Title: Defender steering groan
Post by: cozzie on December 30, 2012, 02:31:03 PM
My defender now sounds like me in the morning. It's 300tdi '96 year model. with power steering. When I steer left it groans. I checked the tyre pressures and topped up the steering reservoir. There are no bubbles in their either. It doesn't happen when stationary. It most noticeable when decelerating with may 1/3 of a turn to the left. There may be a very slight vibration in the steering wheel when it does it but to be honest our road surfaces as such that I couldn't confirm that.

Does anyone have any ideas?

id doubt it being a cv joint, have you checked the uj's on the steering column as they can dry up & start to sieze up, on the other hand what condition is the drive belt in for the PAS pump? what sort of condition is the PAS fluid?

mike surely the steering colum uj,s would make the noise stationary as well , he says it does it when moving and turning left

Easy stuff first, nice thin oil on the column UJ's to penetrate in then something a bit thicker to lube properly and last.

PAS belt tight?

PAS level OK? Possibly renew fluid and bleed through, I have known air to make noises in the steering boxes.

Steering damper?
