ok please stop laughing long enough to read this.......
has anyone got any experience of modifying freelanders for offroading? im mainly thinking of rtv acceptable recovery points. tow bar would be a posibility for the back, although id prefer to bridle if theres a decent chassis point. looking at camel trophy freebies they seemed to use an A-bar on the front and attached portable winches to these. again bridle would be preferable.
other point would be with engine/gearing; a major downside with manual freebie is with it not having a low box it often wont go slow enough, slipping clutch is only other option. anyone know if its possible to remap engine (either td4 or the older turbo diesel, not petrol) so it idles at a slower speed, allowing me to run slower road speed on tickover. or is there another way to lower gearing, road speed?
i know theres the madfreelanders club i was gona ask there but i thought id pick local brains first

Everything is so much more expensive than just keeping/getting the 90 running reliably.

I have heard that ?800 will give you the same ground clearance as a standard 90!
TBH the camel clubs and freebie folks may be the best places to pick up bits, could get some second hand stuff at much reduced prices!

not so worried bout under body protection. i recon if you go slow, as you should do offroad, then most knocks make noise but do little or no damage. i seen freebie underneath and most delicate things like brake/fuel lines well hung out of reach. im not planning to make it a tank underneath lol. i used my new freebie offroad for a year and worst i did was dent the rear exhaust silencer. and it did go in some adventurous places lol ::)

lift kits cheaper than ?800. im not worried bout lifting too high. ok i have bellied out in freebie but how many have bellied discos and defenders on thier diffs? its not impossible. have dragged sills over rocks with zero damage, although maybe rock sliders of they are available.....
its mainly recovery points, engine/gearing changes that could allow it to drive/creep slower im more iinterested in

I saw 3 Freelanders in the space of a week, gone through dry stane walls into fields. Under body protection wouldnt have done them any good......but a roll-cage would!!! :(
Maybe theyre tougher than what we give them credit for, but for off-roading, id stick to you 90!!

i like a challenge lol, freebie aint a 'hairdressers artificial offroader'

That said having driven Dougs it is very very good off road I managed up a hill a RRC couldnt.
However the 90 is so much prettier on the eye so take,Georges advice.

lol, seen them before...now thats a machine n a half lol. disco/rrc chassis and 'freelander' body....must be for the aerodynamic shape ::)

Is this not getting a bit out of hand now ???
Doug saw some funky tyres on a freelander ata driving day and now is going for the whole space frame, rollcages custom built kit.
Stick to getting some oil into the gearbox - there not water lubricated, and a quick touch of hammerite on the bonnet. :D :D

My tyres are the dogs off road, and as for capabilites, the freebie is as good as the Disco, I recall the last driving day, one or five discos getting stuck where my freebie managed through. Go for it Doug, build a disco chomping freebie! ill start you off want to buy mine? :D

lol, freebies do shock some of the old school with how much they can do.
has anyone any knowledge about the engines, is it possible to re-map them? adjusting idle speed would it allow the car to creep slower on tick over?lower its chances of stalling at low speed ???

Converting to automatic should help with the slow speed work.

Freebie may not be butch but it's a really handy competant little tool (no inuendo intended!).
Again, take a gander at this month's LRO Issue 1 2011 Jan - couple of interesting relavant articles.

Hi Doug,
November's LRO (pp 54-58) had a useful article on a guy in the Flatlands who bought a cheap 134,000 mile manual Freebie and did some mods to make it more suitable for off-roading (greenlaning ::) ).
Good article - and I was thinking of you when I read it - assuming you'd be on to it like a tiger onto a goat .... :D
