Swivel Pin Housing retaining bolts?
« on: February 20, 2012, 05:14:22 PM »
Hi I went to replace the oil seals in my Swivel pin housing and instantly was stuck as the bolts which hold the unit to the main axel body where very badly corroded :(

Does anyone know where i can get new bolts?

and any tips on getting the old bolts out?

I guess I might have to cut the head off them and drill the rest out? :(

Oh and its on a 1997 Discovery non ABS

Have come across this problem before get a pair of good vice grips onto the bolt head and get some heat into the axle casing where each bolt goes in,heat each one whilst working vice grips back and forth.

Bit far away then lol the part number is ftc3456 (bolt swivel housing) as for getting them out i took the pins out top and bottom then just eased the seal on as i had the same problem but didnt fanct tackling it. i have seen them cut at the top but wouldnt recomend that.

Hope this helps Cheers Bill

it was for the oil seal on the swivel pin housing, i removed hub and went at it from the front instead. you have to be very gentile with new seal.

the bolts are nothing fancy take one out and go to a local hardware shop, they are something like m6x15mm
you will get a box full for what landrover will take for 10

He's talking about the bolts holding the swivel housing to the axle, are you thinking of the wee ones that retain the seal ? - But you're right, LR Genuine Prats will be 3x the price of the same item from the same manufacturer but not in an LR box.... Quoted £37 for UJs the other day, Strathearn do good quality GKN ones with a Bearmach label for £13.

If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

The main bolts are mission critical. Get the proper ones from the addocks less you know about bolt spec.

Those flange bolts are an angle grinder job lest they are recent .

If it is just the seal to do you can cut it at the top. Cut the spring inside the seal too and
join it up by making a hook in wire. Seal the top of seal in sika flex to join it up. This is on Teri Anne Wakemans site

It works  if you are not intending to rebuild the swivels. When and if you are, the job can be done proper.
