Hi
Im planning on starting a lovely project of building a 100" Defender
I plan to take a old Sorned Discovery 1 300tdi and taking the body off and replacing it with a Defender 110 shorted to fit.
I want to keep everything bar the Body. obviously i would have to weld a Defender Rear cross-member and new out riggers for the bulkhead.

Can i get away with not needing a Q plate? Tom

If the Discovery stays as it is & is on a SORN,
it should be able to keep its Registration number.
 (no need to be issued with a Q registration)
ie, it keeps enough points to be the same vehicle.
The age of the major components are known & the chassis is the chassis on the V5 and its age is known.
It is only being Re-bodied by what you describe.

If you are going to need an IVA is another question. (& if it is the one for ?450)
Possible not for a replacement rear cross member.
The Outriggers might well requirer it to need to have an IVA.

You need to Get the Advice notes from the DVLA & the IVA (individual vehicle approval) guidence notes by VOSA/DVLA.

Have you read the DVLA site on Registering vehicles & Radical Modifications.
The Links are there and the information on the Points for Engine, Suspension etc.

Im not 100% the discovery has been sorned but it is off the road.

Ok so by the looks of thinks it Will need to get its IVA. If i am to put the Defender Body on it!

If you remember the TV series a 4X4 is born he never mentioned anything about the IVA etc which is rather unusual.

2011 now and the SVA changed to the IVA on May 2009.

He tells you about the SVA in some of his other build programmes..
Talk to your local DVLA office, or first get the Notes.

You were asking about a Q reg,
 that is easy to comply with keeping your original registration number.

You just need to find out what you need to do for the DVLA because you are modifying a chassis.

I have just given my opinions.
Others will have different ideas possibly & different opinions or experiences.

Only the DVLA will tell you depending on how the wind blows, if its just a VIC, or Informal inspection or a full IVA.

have fun with it, no need to stress if you build a good safe vehicle.
Take loads of pictures and keep all reciepts.

If you are young i think you will have problems to get road insurance untill you are over 24..
for a modified 4x4.
Worth thinking about.

Thank you for your time its been very useful!

I will contact DVLA about it soon.

I thought if i went through a Full IVA it would then be on a Q Reg?

I will no doubt be posting photos and have a build diary online :D

I am only 18 When it is finished (Im guessing it will take about a year till its road legal) I will be 19 and have 2 years no claims (fingers crossed!) I was quoted ?1600 for a defender 90 300Tdi recently from the NFU which compared ot my friend who are paying arround ?2500+ for there wee Corsas and Clios is cheap!

Just saw your post in the for sale section, now I see why you were asking!

If you build that, technically it would need IVA'd. It won't pass. A standard defender of that era wouldn't pass.

There are a hell of a lot of landies out there which should be IVA'd, as any chassis mod technically renders it a different vehicle, so you lose the ID. If you take the regs to the letter, ANY chassis mod counts. Weld-on rollcage, bobtail etc.

Different DVLA inspectors will view it differently, I know some are sympathetic with landys due to their bolt-together nature.

Be interested to follow your build, especially if you go the IVA route. I've not heard of anyone getting through one with this sort of build.

Might be best to speak to people that have had vehicles through a SVA or now a IVA. ;)
There are enough around.

Not any great problem really to have a vehicles undergo an IVA.
Build quality and meeting the standards required is really rather simple with a Hybrid.

A vehicle can also easilly be Re-Built or Radically Altered and keep the original Registration year.
Thats where the points system comes in.
(read the up to date official information the DVLA provide for checking all you need to know)

Using a peviously used chassis or in the case of a Monocoque vehicle a previously used body for a build,
and using parts from other vehiclres that have had an ID will very likely lead to the vehicle getting issued with a Q plate.
But then that will be a decision made by people whos job and powers it is to do that as their employment.
DVLA/VOSA.
THey are very helpful because thats part of their job.

That's cool, I've got a hybrid in the pipeline so if you get it through that's good news for me. I can only go on what I've read as I don't personaly know anyone who has got one through. Keep us updated!
