best engine in a series for economy

best engine in a series for economy

Hi, looking for advice on the best engine to put into series3, Fuel economy at moment dismal, so I think a more modern engine is required. What suggestions and experiences do people have?

what engine you running just now?
overdive fitted?
what mpg do you get?

Ha. Its a motor I used to own, I am wondering about buying it back and converting, 2.25 petrol, SU carb, no overdrive, knobbly tyres 15mpg, great torque and pick up off road but economy a killer. (Already have RR diffs I could fit)

overdrive and road tyres will raise it....

as for an engine, pick one with injectors and it will go up, get a 5 bearing s3 diesel(cheap as chips(lol pun innded) and more reliable than the early 3 bearing, refit it out for biodiesal and your onto a winner:P

lpg conversion? ok uses same amount of fuel but at around half price, it confuses your walllet into thinking your getting better mpg

hi  there, im running a 2 1/4 petrol in my 2a, with no overdrive, turner head,electronic dissy,magnecor leads,lucas gold coil and a weber carb and sitting on 750 r16 tyres with fw hubs and getting 22/3 mpg
land rover daft!!!or just plain daft!!!!!

Thanks for all the replys, on reflection going to stick with freebie, since you can pick up complete vehicle now so cheap if I do break it at RTV it wont be too crippling to fix.

200TDi or take the turbo off and run it as a Di. Getting mid 30's out of my Di, simple and reliable install plenty power for for an otherwise fairly standard 2a.

I get 20mpg in a Series 3 with a Rover V8 so better than the 2.25L and light years faster than a diesel. Just breaks the transmission that's all  ;D.

a freebie in an rtv. :D...thats sure to spice things up lol

have you managed to fit an extra recovery point to your motor? always thought that was a stumbling point with them

Ok, need to look into that more, existing point at front appears to be rated at 4.5tons so you are right wouldnt want to only have that if it got to the stage of snatch recovery. Will have a look and see whats there to bolt to, if anything, failing that, a strop through the door and onto the handbrake lever will do it, handbrakes useless for anything else (ok I'll service that too :)
On saying that it does seem there is a bit of confusion as to the suitability of the factory fitted front point. It is classed as a "recovery point" as opposed to "towing eye"
Might need some help or chat with scrutineer about this, anybody else got any advice?

i only have standard factory points on mine, no tow bar either. the point under the front bash plate is lash down only, never for towing/recovery. ive been pulled out by the standard rings in the front bumper including one time when i was completely beached on my chassis. sandy pulled me out that time, literaly an inch at a time, wouldnt want to try snatching even though i know mine is 100% solid its not meant for snatching.
someone from the know will no doubt clarify but i dont think these standard points would be accepted on an rtv. i asked before and it was suggested the chassis rails as you can see under the bonnet could be used for attaching a recovery ring. i would think doing both sides and bridling it would save stressing chassis too much.

got me thinking of trialing a freebie again.....i do miss it lol
