Free spools tight when clutch is disengaged and makes a crunch noise when changing feed from in to out . Think lack of use may have something to do with it. Don't want to open the winch up and fires pieces everywhere. There is a rugged guide DVD for servicing winch but amazon has stopped selling it.

look on the web at superwinch, the champion winches are just old superwinch designs, there isnt really much to them, motor on one side gearbox on the other, brake inside the drum. i would  bet the problem is the brake is seized inside the drum, remove the winch from its mount and unbolt the bars that cross the drum holding the two parts together. there is a hex shaft inside pull that out, the brake should then come out from inside the drum, it will have three shoes that are loose you are then left with two cones with concentric threads, this will be dry or siezed keeping the brake on , clean and grease the threads but not the shoes obviuosly, then rebuild.

this is roughly what you will find inside the drum

i use lithium based, swivel grease works very well in the gearbox.
