Oil in Timing Belt housing
« on: August 11, 2010, 06:56:33 PM »
I'm new to this landy business, I've had my 1986 landy for just over a week

i'm getting a oil leak (2-3 drops a day) from the Timing belt housing drain hole. I'm assuming it is a Crankshaft seal has gone, i've got a couple of questions.

how difficult is it to replace this myself, (Reasonably practical if inexperienced)

How many hours would i expect a garage to do this in?

Anybody recommended in aberdeen for working on landy's?

Yeah im worried as my disco has NO leaks that drip(theres oil near the plugs but it isnt enough to get to the ground)

My s3 leaks from engine, gearbox, diffs, slightly from the hubs....

I'm sure my minor leaks pale into insignificance, but if it's a easy enough fix then i'd rather keep the oil on the inside. :-[

This view may change somewhat with longer landy ownership!!!!!!! ::)

hi,

if it is a timing belt then there should be no oil there (i believe), so it looks like a seal is gone, which would probably mean taking out the front puley and crank sprocket etc before getting to the seal. the timing would then have to be carefully redone.

if it is a timing chain, and the oil is coming from the crank pulley area, then you could probably do it and not disturb the timing at all. (the front pulley with ancillary belts would come off and the oil seal would be accessible then) you dont need to take off the crank sprocket.

cheers

I've got a timing Belt, so the seal issue is what i thought. How much time is involved in getting to the belt, or is it best to get a garage to do it since i need to set the timing back up again.
