As above its a 200tdi defender got the sump off but the ladder underneath is stuborn. is there dowels into the flywheel housing??

Hi Bill,
        Yes you can change them with the engine still in. It's head off, sump off and unbolt the conrods and push out upwards so the piston and conrod come out complete. Don't understand what you mean by the ladder is stubborn, are you lifting the full engine out or trying to remove the crank? If the engine was good to start with swap the conrods and build it back up unless your giving it a refurb while it's down that far.

Sumps off but there is a splash plate(think the technical term is ladder) now covering the bottom of the conrods it seems to have dowels or bolts into the flywheel housing. can only get to one conrod with oil pump removed!

i think i will have to remove engine after all

        I understand now, looks like it'll be easier with it out the car. At least you'll have better access to everything.

But that was only a shallow one 

Ladder comes off with gentle pulling.

The whole lot can be done in the car, however have plenty of rags to hand as the oil just continually drips on you unless you are really good at wiping it off

iirc there are 2 bolts that come through from the bellhosuing into the lower ally cradle,

ask ross m, he's good at changing conrods in a 200tdi

I've a knackered 200 engine block, which has 4 pistons (and therefore con-rods) in it. You haul them out, they're yours.... East Lothian

ive got 4 300tdi rods i think they are the same

Thanks for all the offers but turns out that the block has been damaged by the bent conrod so now on the lookout for an engine!
