Couple of d2 questions.
« on: April 18, 2011, 07:17:27 PM »
Was hoping a few of you guys could help me.
I have a d2 4.0 v8 and i have noticed that the drivers side front sits 3/4 of an inch lower than the passenger side front on level ground.
I had a look underneath and the drivers side has 7 coils on the spring and the passenger side has 8 coils on the spring.
It doesnt look like the spring is broken at all.
How hard is it to change a coil spring on a d2?
Sorry next question,it looks like the alignment is out on the front in particullar the drivers front which i have a bit of increased tyre wear on the inside edge, can i just replace one tyre, all the others are around 7mm and they are bfg mud terrain tyres.
I will be getting the steering set up asap.
Last question what grade of oil do these things take? 10/40????

Many thanks jay.

Possible that someone has put the springs on the wrong sides if they have been a 'Handed pair',
more common that it's long spring on the drivers side.

This will/may give you an idea of the standard spring spec for your vehicle.
Springs are/may be 'Handed',
(Basically to suit the road camber of a left or right hand drive vehicle in the country its being supplied to,
which side of the road its driven on.,,
possible extra weight on the drivers side, driver when alone,
steering box, column, wheel etc.)

george

Ps, am i right in remembering that you said once its a Black Discovery V8.
I think Pythons is also a black V8
& his previously  lived in France,
could your Disco have been set up for French roads??

Oil is 10w 40 based on my own survey of oil company web tools. Put in reg number and postcode and they give you best fit.

Hmmmm, thats gave me a few ideas,my discovery is dark blue registered in 1999,as i said it looks like it isnt broken or anything,i just dont want to take the spring out and get the new one supplied and its the same.
Would be great if someone had a d2 and could count the coils for me,that would be brilliant.

You will find the following site usefull lots of pictures http://www.discovery2.co.uk/

As for oil its 5/30 fully synthetic.

Springs depend on what your doing with vehicle there are different grades, denoted by colours. When I fitted the winch to mine it needed the heavier front springs due to the extra weight. Quite alot of srings can go soft and some aftermarket ones are well know for this(quite quickly apparently) Land rover springs are colour coded and depending on where they are on the vehicle there may be differences due to the weight of a particular corner.

5/30 seems very very thin to me for a Rover! I would go for 10/30 or 10/40 myself.

I would second Georges thoughts on the springs being handed, swap them over and see what it is like.

Tyre question, really you want to have the axle pairs matching wear wise. What condition is the spare in? If it is new then buy 1 new tyre and fit that along with the spare to the front, and put the other one on the boot door.

Not according to the workshop manual, 5/30 for our climate. There are two other grades for a different climate range.

I would always run 15w/40 in a V8 rover engine. These are primative engines that suffer from low oil pressure when hot. 5w/30 in a td5 engine though!!

Phoned land rover and the springs are different prices so they way well be different sizes etc etc.

My spare is a normal tyre, the ones on the discovery just now are bfg mud terrains,so it wouldnt match up.
In a ideal world if i could find a part worn around 6 or 7 mm mud terrain that would be ideal.

I have some 5/40 at my work, would this be a sort of in between????

Was out today servicing the discovery so took a few pics of said springs.
Drivers side has 7 coils and passenger side has 8 coils.

I personally think a spring has been fitted to it and its wrong????

I would swap them over and see what happens. Costs nothing and may fix the problem :)
