Discovery 2 v8 viscous fan
« on: April 01, 2011, 01:57:53 PM »
Hi there everyone i need to change the radiator on my disco 2 v8.
What kind of job is it like to do?
Also i will be changing the alt belt while i am there.
What is the viscous fan like to remove?
What size spanner do i need?
Is it left hand thread?

Many thanks jay.

Viscous fan spanner can be bought from loads of online suppliers, from memory they come in 2 sizes so best to check what you have (I think it might be 32mm and 36mm, though some of the spanners are double ended so you should be OK). Yes it is left hand thread, the most difficulf job is usually getting the fan off. Once thats done it should be ok.

Found a link, the bottom one I guess has both sizes.

ill give it a try later today, AFTER the rear bushes (which will also probably be a pain to do) then its off to Knockhill tomorow for a shot of the 4x4 course.
Do Land Rover design problems into the cars? if only they were as well built (and easy to strip) as the German blue propeller stuff.   ::)

Sorry ive not replied to this.
Managed to get the radiator done ok,took around 2hrs.
Didnt need to take the viscous fan off to do the alternator belt anyway so one less hassle there.
However only realised that my car has a.c.e.
I know what a.c.e stands for but could someone tell me how it works?

In basic terms you have 4 hydraulic rams at each corner which are activated when cornering. If you turn right the left hand rams will pressurise and stop the body rolling too much. If turning left, the right hand rams does the same.

It is a brilliant system, the only other big beam axled LR that comes close to the handling capability is a P38 with Arnott air bags and Bilsteins.

on the disco 2 the ace system only has 2 hydraulic pistons. one for each axle,

the piston either pushes or pulls according to how the car is leaning, the pistons are on the drivers side (font and back), the other sides are connected to the pistons as a normal anti roll bars.

there are 2 or 3 (accelerometers) sensors dotted about the car telling the ace when the body is rolling, the axle is then pushed (or pulled) to oppose the roll.

cheers.
