gearbox in a stage 1
« on: August 09, 2014, 09:08:31 PM »
hey all,

My dad has bought a series 3 stage 1 and we suspect the gearbox is tooshed hes wondering if it would be possible to put an auto box in it?

Or any other boxes?

I was wondering how easy a 200tdi and box would go in?

Cheers

the stage one should have the lt 95 in it  ::) - you could get another one of those of course

a 200/300tdi will go in with a few mods

auto boxes have been fitted before - quite a few mods  ::)

by choice i would fit either a r380 or an lt77 from a defender - 5 speed and at least the gear stick will come out in roughly the right place
life is but a journey from birth to death - why rush ?
run a series landie and take your time

If it's an LT95 then if it works it's fine ........... they are very strong and only really suffer layshaft wear so it can make a real racket in 1st 2nd 3rd and less in top. Layshaft wear isn't worth fixing in my opinion. Check the oil and turn the radio up  ;).
If you have crunching noises between gears I would check the clutch is fully disengaging (hydraulics) before suspecting the gearbox.

Good luck

I'd stick with the LT95, I love it, can stick it in 4th from about 30 and never have to change ger for the rest of your journey, layshaft bearing in mine makes a fair noise but as I'm doing a full rebuild of the truck I'm getting the box rebuilt by a specialist down south should be about £450 which isn't too bad really. If you decide to go down the auto route I've 4HP22 sitting in dry storage for the last couple years you can have for beer money. Never driven with it myself the but the rangie it came out of drove in to the garage where it got removed (guy decided to convert it to deisel  for some silly reason...)

Alright cheers guys,

Oil check is on the cards not got around to it yet he only told me yesterday about the noises. The gear changes can be very stiff and crunchy or just crunchy. i managed to change from 3 to 4 with no problems then parked and tried reverse and it just crunched to a crunchy thing gave up in the end. I also tried with out the clutch as i thought the clutch might be on its road out but it just done the same thing.
