Hi,

I have a Disco II auto (zf hp22), and have done 230,000 miles on it (bought it at 18,000)
only had 1 leak and that was due to 2 loose bolts inside the bell housing.

apart from that i have had no issues at all, and i quite enjoy having it.

i get about 33mpg (ish) motorway driving, which is less then the manual gearbox.
i have a td5 engine.

disco I has the zf4 hp22 gearbox as well, but the hydraulic brian is not solenoid activated like the disco II ones i believe (disco II is zf4hp22 EH). (so less to go wrong)
wont make much if any difference.

i have a zf4hp22 (old style) on my defender as well from a rangie classic.

both work very well and have never let me down. ive found the auto really great when offroading.

obviously i must have had a club right foot never have i managed over 30mpg from a big land rover freelanders yes both of them were petrol and delivered over 30mpg    but discos not a chance    i had 2 td5 auto the first always returned 510 miles to 20 gallons of diesel the second only eve rmanaged 410 miles to 20 gallons and towing was down to 11-12 mpg petrol discos also auto the best 21 mpg the worst18 mpg and never depresed with calculating the towing mpg had 3 of them  the classic rr a manual gave 22 mpg  and the next one auto gave 21-22 at a steady 55mph v6 disco auto at best 28 and normally 24 tdv8 almost 30 mpg ONCE that was motorway driving at a steady 70 mph normal 24-26 mpg towing even worse with a caravan 18-19 mpg and stock trailer 14 mpg
now i wonder if you are calculating the economy correctly or going by the computer  :( :(

Graeme,
. . , , '' ; : : ! ! ? ?  all are free to use on a modern keyboard!  ;)
Make life easier for others.

4.54 ltrs to the imperial gallon.
(not everybody seems to know that.)

Easy to think sometimes when standing at the pump, that 9 litres = 2 gallons. (as near as matters)

Hi Graeme,

why so much variation on your 2 td5s, 510 for 20 gallons then 410 for 20 gallons ?, is it concievable you could get one with 610 per 20 litres?

i run with nice hard tyres (sometimes) and well greased/oiled and maintained transmission and brakes etc. so rollling resistance was minimised,
aircon off etc, no towbar, no junk in boot.

havn't calculated it for a wee while though, cant afford to fill the tank without good reason now :(

anyway the point is it is lower but not too much different from manual gearboxes, but i don't know the figure for mauals.

 ;D

it was the way the engine was set up land rover would not touch it (it was running all right other than the thirst) the thirsty one was brand new as well and no guts. ann summers was wanting it as well, it had a hose that could be used as a sexual aid you get used to land rovers

Not had a Disco for a few years now but with 200 Tdi and 300 Tdi I seem to remember getting  27-28 mpg ?  I believe the 200 was slightly better than any of the 300s.
