Post by: shug on December 16, 2012, 12:29:54 AM
hi all
has anyone had a problem with the lt77 gearbox fitted to defender 90 tdi [1990] . the gearbox was a bit noisey yesterday but not anymore, it has sometimes been sticking in 5th gear even when its parked up, after a bit of wagglin about it will eventualy come back out, everything else seems ok . has anyone got any idea what could be wrong , is it terminal or an easy fix any advice would be welcome.
many thanks shug...

Hi ,
I've found that usually when a gearbox sticks in gear it is due to worn "slippers" inside the syncromesh (these are small bits of metal which click into position either locking a gear in place or keeping it in free spin) . They get an edge and jam up and it is a bit of a waggle to get them back out.
cheap to replace if you do it yourself.
but you would probably want to replace other worn bits like baluk rings etc as well.

cheers
