I just cant mate the engine to the gearbox??
« on: March 05, 2011, 01:11:24 PM »
Any advice guys welcome.
At the stage to finally drop in my 300tdi engine but it just wont go. I can get the splines to lign up and goes on so far but then jams. Have tried useing 2 long bolts in housings as a guide still no joy. i was certain the clutch was dead centre beforhand and rechecked it again this morning. What am i doing wrong its driving me nutty  ;D.
Cheers.

Scott have you tried the friction plate on the gearbox with out the engine?

Just to make sure there are no burs or such like on plate i had a badly cast one before and had the same problem.

Hope this helps

Finally she has the heart of a tdi  ;D.  Its not running yet but thats the engine in. I realised i had the engine hoist too high by a tiny amount but enough to bind the shaft so it refused to fit in the crankshaft copper bush. Once spotted it slid on lovely and i tightened the bolts in alternate pattern. Clutch works fine can engage all gears. Just gota put on a new sump, new alternator and timing belt and she be ready. Fairly pleased with myself has to be said bar the mounts been welded i have managed evrything so far on my own. Take my time and it will be done right.

I had a brand new alternator on my 19j and the ratings seem the same even the mounts but it has a v-pulley compared to the 300tdi multi ribbed pulley. Can get the large nut of both but how are the pulleys fitted on they seem very tight. I want to see if i can just use the 19j one befor going out and buying a new one. Thanks.

Ahh comp safari is it?
I was hoping to leave the whole install pretty much standard fit parts. Its the 300tdi engine fitted so would i not have to change all the front engine pulleys to match?. I do have a complete 200tdi sitting was ament to be sold but the guy has went AWOL so im keeping it for now. Prefer not plunder it for parts though as i want to sell or swap it for a 300tdi for another build.

Think we would all like to see a photo of the end result with a grinning owner standing next to it? We have all heard so much about your project and it is great to hear that you are making progress.

Photo will be added dont worry. Bar running a cone air filter evryhting used was  OE parts. Even the steve parker pipe kit got sent back. And my water bottle for the wipers is the style that hugs the front end of your inner arch  behind the headlamp so well out the way. love doing this sort of thing especially on the defenders trully fantastic motors.

Oi birthday party you say were and when man? I cant use MSN to chat so try catch you when im checking my emails. Saturday going down to daltons with all my junk if im lucky ill then have funds to go straight into machinemart for some tools i been eyeing up.
